The Research Proving Cough Suppression Therapy Is Simpler Than You Think

On this episode of The Swallow Your Pride Podcast, we sit down with Marie Jetté PhD, CCC-SLP, a clinician-scientist who has spent over 20 years studying voice and upper airway disorders and ended up at the forefront of behavioral cough suppression research. We cover what refractory chronic cough actually looks like for patients who have been coughing for seven, ten, even twenty years with no real answers — and why behavioral therapy often works in as few as two sessions. We talk about interoception: how training someone to recognize and respond to their urge to cough (rather than just react to it) is the actual mechanism behind why this treatment works. We dig into the different ways cough suppression is being delivered right now — telehealth, group models that are outperforming one-on-one, and a wearable digital therapeutic that is in the FDA approval process. And we go inside a five-year NIH-funded R01 clinical trial enrolling across three sites, using fMRI to understand what is changing in the brain during treatment. If you have ever wondered whether behavioral cough suppression is worth adding to your practice, this episode is your answer.
